ABOUT KAYLEE YOUNTS
I have always had diverse interests as a child. In elementary school I liked to play Barbies, but I also loved Ninjago and mud. When I started art, in addition to my feeble social life, I got into video games. I've always wanted to make art my career; portraits, make-up, comics, you name it. My journey began in traditional media, where I developed a strong eye for composition and color theory, before transitioning into the dynamic world of interactive entertainment. Something that offers a spin on common story tropes. Though I have found acceptance in the geek community others aren't as lucky. It still is commonplace that games are considered worse for being "girly games." Many women are mocked for showing an interest in feminine games but will also be harassed for liking games stereotypically played by men.
I started looking into art in the video game industry and began looking more closely at the games I played. What cemented that was the game Hades. It was breathtaking and the characters and backgrounds were so diverse and unique, I will never forget it. As I looked into the company that created it, I was disappointed to find out that in the game's entire company, only one-fourth of them are women. I want young girls to enjoy a game and see that someone like them made it. This is why I became a student at SCAD and why I shall continue into Game Development.
